Sushi Surfer Sliders and more

Many local residents — especially those in East Honolulu — know about Otsuji Farm, located in Hawaii Kai. In 1954, Kakuji and Fumie Otsuji started the farm to provide for their family. Their youngest child, Edwin, took over the farm and taught his kids the lay of the land.

His youngest child, Jonas, went on to become a sushi chef in Las Vegas and now in Utah. The ultimate plan, however, is to have Jonas take over the farm when his dad retires.

Jonas was in town last week to introduce a new grab-and-go dish at the KCC Farmer’s Market: Sushi Surfer Sliders. Jonas is known as the Sushi Surfer, so he created this yummy local pupu using his family’s vegetables: Tempura eggplant or shiso topped with a spicy ahi mixture, a special mayonnaise, and unagi sauce. He invited a bunch of Twitter people down to KCC to try the sliders and give an opinion. New food? We’re so there!

New at Otsuji Farms

I got to the Otsuji Farms booth to find Jonas Otsuji himself frying the tempura.

Jonas is making his rounds at the farmer’s markets around town and will be at KCC tomorrow, serving up the Sushi Surfer Sliders. I’ll be there, with an Almond Passion smoothie in hand, waiting in line for mine!
