Did you know there's a speakeasy above Kakaako’s Aloha Beer Co.?
Actually, mixologist Ben Flores doesn’t like to refer to The HI Brau Room as a speakeasy. He considers it a cocktail parlor — one that's not bougie.
“It’s a place where you come, converse, enjoy an immaculate beverage and hopefully you leave saying, ‘Wow, that’s a real special place,’" he says. “A lot of people will think it's a little too fancy, but take a look at the art. You have Picasso with a cigarette, Mona Lisa with a banana and the Rolling Stones painted as if they were Russian czars. It’s more tongue in cheek.”
If you’re walking on Queen Street, look for a door that says ‘The HI Brau Room’ in gold letters. Behind it, you’ll walk up a dimly lit stairway and through another door. And that’s when the experience starts: plush leather chairs, rich purple hues, a waterbuck displayed on the wall, soft lighting, spinning vinyl. And yes, this is all in industrial Kakaako.
“When the owners designed this place, that’s what they wanted — for people to come in and feel transported,” Flores says. "Our taps have no names on them; our bag hangers are monkeys with arms. The fun is in the details of this room.”
Lounge in one of the plush leather chairs or choose a seat at the bar, then peruse the list of cocktails. They have fun names: ‘Take Off My Boots,’ ‘Penicillin’ and Flores’ favorite, ‘The Lazy T L Bar,’ made with Monkey Shoulder Blended Scotch House Drambuie, Bergamot and 5 Spice Bitters.
All food from Aloha Beer Co. can be ordered upstairs except sandwiches. Popular dishes include the sausage and pretzel plate ($16) and the beefsteak board ($30). The sausage and pretzel plate pairs grilled andouille and bratwurst sausages with a duo of house mustards, house pickles and a soft, warm Bavarian pretzel. The beefsteak board features a 12-ounce chef’s cut, usually skirt, that’s marinated in salsa verde and served with a garlic grilled baguette, avocado crema and a mixed greens salad. There’s also a charcuterie board, cheese and fruit board, meatball plate and more.
Plus, complimentary valet parking with no time limit while you’re on property means that aside from tip, parking is free.
And since April marks HI Brau Room’s two-year anniversary, Flores is starting a guest bartender program so aspiring mixologists can get hands-on experience. Festivities on April 12-13 will pay homage to the business’ roots.
