My friend and I were enjoying some of the many creative rolls at Aiea’s Sushi Spot when I noticed “fried Oreos” on the menu. At a sushi spot.
An order gets you five fried fritters for $5.95, but you can upgrade to sundae form for $8.95. Adding the vanilla ice cream was a no-brainer. Go big or go home.
The deep-fried Oreos look bigger than I had imagined. The server explains that these aren’t regular Oreos — they’re Double Stuf Oreos. Even better.
You may be tempted just to order the Oreos alone, but the ice cream upgrade is worth it. The fried shell reminds me of andagi — it’s the perfect balance of crispy exterior and soft, doughy interior. It’s a little oily, but not over-the-top heavy, and the Oreos are hot out of the fryer. Because they’re so big, there’s a good cookie-to-dough ratio.
The ice cream is a generous portion, but you’ll need all of it to balance out all that friedness. Ice cream. Friedness. So much for healthy eating! Who would have known that such a gluttonous dessert could be found at this hole-in-the-wall?
