After almost a year in development, Pint + Jigger's Dave Newman has opened his eagerly awaited speakeasy in a secret location in Honolulu.
Co-owned by his P+J partners Hideo and Grace Simon and Daryn and Nicky Ogino (partners in Village Bottle Shop with Tim Golden), the 36-seat Harry's Hardware Emporium features an impressive menu of all-new signature cocktails, an elevated pupu list and top-shelf liquor flights, which will include Pappy Van Winkle, Hirsch 25 yr., and Craigduff 25 yr. to name a few.
The bulk of the cocktail menu consists of a whimsical collection of mixed drinks made by Newman and his staff, many of whom are familiar faces from Pint + Jigger. The cocktails at Harry's are meant to be savored over time. None exemplifies this more than my new favorite, the NeverEnding Story.
Consisting of a cold brew coffee ice sphere with Amaro Montenegro ($12), the flavor of this drink changes as the coffee sphere melts. The cocktail's name is derived from the fact that as long as you have ice in your glass, you can get a refill, appropriately named The Next Chapter, for $8. This is the perfect drink to spend the evening with, sipping the night away.
For those who prefer something more on the sweeter side, Newman's take on a Grasshopper ($12) is worth ordering.
The standard combination of cream, creme de menthe, and creme de cacao gets an added kick from the addition of tequila. The milkshake glass brings an added sense of fun, but the best part comes in the form of a stainless steel straw that ensures every sip you take is ice cold.
Newman has included other fun things on his new cocktail menu, like slushies.
Spinning away in a slushie machine behind the bar, the Scotch Ginger Colada ($12), is a quick and refreshing option. Also available from the slushie machine is a cold Irish Coffee ($12).
One of the first things that you’ll notice when you enter will be the barrel wall. Bar classics receive an added level of refinement after aging for a time in oak barrels.
Those who dislike the harshness of spirits might be surprised by how the barrel diminishes the burn of the alcohol while preserving flavor, like in Newman’s barrel-aged Negroni ($14).
Available to eat on the speakeasy menu are several elevated food items like bone marrow mac & cheese ($22), caviar tastings ($80-$110) with a champagne pairing, and raw oysters (market price).
