Your ultimate gaming, sci-fi and comic convention is back Aug. 3-5 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Besides stars and other luminaries from each genre, including film and TV, you'll find more than 100 vendors, panels, artists, photo ops, autograph ops, concerts, tabletop gaming and a large computer gaming tournament at Comic Con Honolulu. Plus, of course, cosplay galore.
Here are some highlights of the three-day convention:
Exclusives from Roy Thomas
The legendary comic book writer — and Stan Lee’s first successor as editor-in-chief for Marvel Comics — will have his exclusive Marvel Comics “Roy Thomas Marvel characters print” for sale at $20 each. Thomas will be on hand to personally sign each print, and some of the proceeds will go to the Hero Initiative Charity. Thomas is known for co-creating some of the greatest comics characters, including Wolverine, Iron Fist and Ultron.
Kelly Hu’s guest appearance
This local girl who plays China White in 'Arrow' and is best known as Lady Deathstrike in 'X-men II' is returning to the islands. Hu started out as a pageant queen — she was crowned Miss Teen USA in 1985 and Miss Hawaii USA and made the finals of the Miss USA pageant — and went on to recurring roles in 'Vampire Diaries,' 'Hawaii 5-0,' 'CSI: New York' and more.
Jason Isaacs’ Hawaii debut
You probably remember Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, but most recently you can see him as Gabriel Lorca in CBS’s 'Star Trek: Discovery.'
The first official Blizzard panel in Hawaii
Blizzard, the makers of popular games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch, will have their first Hawaii panel, notable especially because it will be the largest gathering of Overwatch voice actors ever in the state. The panel will feature Michael Chu, a writer for the popular video game developer, as well as five voice actors from Overwatch. You'll be able to score autographs and photo ops with Overwatch voice actors all weekend long.
An expanded space for games
We’re talking about 8,000 square feet of video games and 12,000 square feet of tabletop games. There will be special events and tournaments all weekend, designed for individuals of all ages (and gamer levels).
Compete with the best of the best in stunning, over-the-top and otherwise memorable costumes — or politely ask to snap pics of them. Costumes will be judged on craftsmanship, originality/accuracy and presentation at the cosplay contest at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Memberships to attend all three days cost $65, while memberships for select days are $40-55. For more information, visit the Comic Con Honolulu 2018 website.
Tip: Be sure to keep your convention badges with you, since food deals with select eateries near the Convention Center will also be available.
