Star Wars fans worldwide look forward to May 4, a.k.a. National Star Wars Day. “May the Fourth be with you” … get it?
What was once a funny pun is now a full-fledged themed holiday. Fans of the galactic franchise do anything and everything to celebrate – from costume soirees to movie-viewing parties, many of these celebrations have evolved to include food inspired by the film series.
You'll need to be quick, these Star Wars-themed treats are only around until May 4 (and some cases, May 3):
Sweet Revenge Honolulu: Star Wars-themed sweet and savory pies
When: May 3, 10 a.m.-1:15 p.m.
Where: Fort Street Mall farmers market (inside Fort Street Mall), 1132 Bishop St., Downtown
Deets: Sweet Revenge has been selling Star Wars-themed pies all week. The lineup of sweet and savory pies always changes but Sweet Revenge has an out-of-this-galaxy menu to celebrate Star Wars. Featured flavors include Bananakin Skywalker with fresh apple bananas and a puddle of chocolate ganache to represent the Dark Side; Flan Solo made with real vanilla bean custard; Boba Fett, featuring milk tea pastry cream topped with boba in a butter crust; the vegetarian Kale-O-Ren with quinoa, basmati, kale, sweet corn, brussels sprouts, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, cheese and a crispy topping; Wookies and Cream, which is perfect for any peanut butter fiend, and more.
Let Them Eat Cupcakes: Cupcakes, custom sugar cookies, mochi brownies and more
When: May 3, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Hukilau, 1088 Bishop St. (lower lobby of the Executive Centre), Downtown
Deets: Let Them Eat Cupcakes hosts regular pop-ups at Hukilau Honolulu. Today, the local canteen will feature a selection of their signature sweets for Boys’ Day and Star Wars Day — like cupcakes, cookies, mochi brownies, dango sticks, Hokkaido cheese tarts and custom sugar wookies ... I mean cookies. While Let Them Eat Cupcake hasn't posted photos (yet) of what they’re featuring, they’re sure to please any fanboy or fangirl.
Insider tip: Go early. I was at the Girl’s Day pop-up in March and Let Them Eat Cupcakes sold out of most treats within the first hour.
Hukilau Honolulu: Star Wars-themed cocktails and food, 'Jar Jar Drinks' beer roulette
When: May 4, 7-10 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.)
Where: 1088 Bishop St., Downtown, 523-3460
Deets: Hukilau's May the Fourth party includes fun games like Rebels vs. Empire beer pong, Jabba Jiggler Jenga and more. There will also be themed cocktails and food and a 'Jar Jar Drinks' beer roulette. Food specials include Loaded Vader Taters, Fried Endorian Tip-Yip (twice-cooked chicken leg with mean green sauce), Dwarf Tip-Yips (chicken wings), Wookie Cookies (Moof milk and cookies) and more. For drinks, fans can look forward to popping Boba Fett cocktails (frozen margarita made with lilikoi popping boba), Yoda Soda, Millenium Margarita (frozen margarita) and a 'Shot in the Dark Side,' a glittering purple shot with a Vodka base.
Sidenote: Hukilau will also be featuring their $2 tub thumping, something the restaurant recently introduced (it's usually featured every Thursday). For $2 per drink, customers can pick at random from a tub full of assorted bottled beers and cans, some of which are $8 in value.
Double Three: 33 Dark Side Waffle
When: May 4, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: City Square Shopping Center, 1284 Kalani St., Kalihi, 650-2733
Deets: Bubble waffle fans, take note: This Star Wars-themed dessert is only available on May 4 for three hours. It features a charcoal bubble waffle, one scoop of ice cream and your choice of toppings. Double Three is also participating in the Special Olympics Hawaii fundraiser, and $1 from every 33 Dark Side Waffle will be donated to the organization.
Sidenote: Double Three usually opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, but this special Star Wars creation will be available starting at 9 a.m.. The 33 Dark Side Waffle may be available in the days following May 4, according to Double Three. Call the shop before you visit to see if it's still available.
Pancakes & Waffles: BB-8 pancakes, Jedi Milk
When: May 4-31, 2019
Where: City Square Shopping Center, 1284 Kalani St., Kalihi, 847-7770
Deets: Pancakes & Waffles is well known for their namsake items. For May 4, the Kalihi breakfast spot is kicking things up a notch with BB-8 pancakes. These butterscotch buttermilk pancakes come topped with whipped cream and caramel. Limited-time Jedi Milk will feature a creamy lime Green River drink with whipped cream. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 4, Pancakes & Waffles is participating in a fundraiser for Special Olympics Hawaii, and $1 from every purchase of these items will be donated to the organization.
Note: The Star Wars-themed items are only available at the City Square (Kalihi) Pancakes & Waffles location.
