Something new: The Monarch Tea Room

There aren’t too many tea rooms in Honolulu, so there is certainly room for one more. The latest is The Monarch Tea Room, located in the back of Na Mea Hawaii/Native Books in the Ward Warehouse.

Liza and Shakkel Yunis, who moved to Hawaii from London, created the tea room to provide a tea experience that they know and love. The location in Na Mea fits their concept, as it ties back to Hawaii’s history and the monarchy — King David Kalakaua learned about British afternoon tea in his travels around the world, and fell in love with it.

You don’t have to order the full afternoon tea set if you visit The Monarch Tea Room, as items are available ala carte. For my cofficing friends, I need to point out that there is free wifi (do we now call this a tea-fice?), and it’s a comfortable place to rest, read, or work with a pot of luxury tea. An added bonus that Shakkel didn’t realize until last week: They have prime parade viewing from the window.

The Monarch Tea Room is having its grand opening on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with live entertainment, tea brewing and sampling stations, a monarchy competition in the store, and more.

The employees are dressed like tea ladies that you might find in England, which is a cute touch.

I"d think tea rooms would be a natural for HNl, a special place for tourists who probably don't have them back home.

Do we need to bring our own fancy hat?  Maybe I will bring Sean since we love our teas!
