Three days before Father’s Day weekend, my friends Sean and Lena Morris said, “Fares have dropped! Let’s go to San Francisco for Hubert Keller’s birthday!” Now, I never do spontaneous trips like that unless I’m somehow jolted to attention by the appearance of an ex-boyfriend or something. But this was something that sounded like a once-in-a-lifetime treat, and I was technically available, so off we went for a quick weekend getaway.
If you don’t know him, Hubert Keller is a celebrated French chef and is known for his Fleur de Lys restaurants in San Francisco (closing soon) and Las Vegas, and as a judge on Top Chef. He’s also a popular multitasking DJ/chef at the annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival held here each fall.
As the Morris’ tagalong, I was fortunate to get a seat at chef Keller’s very intimate birthday dinner at a new restaurant called Aveline, which had gotten rave reviews in the short time since it opened. The executive chef is Texas native Casey Thompson, who competed in Top Chef, so you know it’s gotta be good.
I usually do my travel blogs grouped by day or theme, but this dinner was so amazing, I felt it needed its own blog entry. In fact, it was probably one of my most outstanding meals in San Francisco, and I can’t wait to go back.
Dinner at Aveline
When we visited Aveline, it had been open only a week. Chef Hubert Keller chose this place for his birthday dinner partly because he had walked past it every day during its construction, and was excited to taste what the completed restaurant had to offer. The other reason is coming up after cocktails...
