Rumfire’s spiked afternoon tea

When Sheraton Waikiki’s Joanie Matsumoto invited me and a couple of other girlfriends to Rumfire for afternoon tea, we all had visions of sitting on a veranda, sipping tea in china cups and cooling ourselves with dainty lace fans. Imagine our (pleasant) surprise to find their afternoon tea service is actually an array of iced tea cocktails, and their tea sandwiches are sliders! Well, hellerrrr … Rumfire is a bar. What a fun concept.

Every day from 1 to 4 p.m., you can opt to have spiked afternoon tea there instead of, or in addition to, their happy hour — which overlaps from 3 to 5 p.m. The menu features tea cocktails, sliders, desserts, and sides ala carte; or you can order a full tea service for $20, which includes one tea cocktail, a scone, two sliders of your choice and a dessert.

Since they figure all the ladies will be out shopping on Black Friday: for two weeks starting Nov. 29, they’ll offer a 15 percent discount off of the $20 tea set price for anyone who brings in a shopping receipt dated from November 29 from anywhere. Sounds like a pretty good way to unwind after a crazy day of guerrilla shopping. Here’s a glimpse of our spiked tea:

Meet my new best friend, Chef Danny Chew of Rumfire. He's the man behind the delicious tea service creations. I'm skipping ahead of myself, but I want you to know that Danny is also working on an Asia Street Food menu in the coming months. Since he's from Taiwan, I begged him to make gua bao, the Taiwanese "sandwich" I've been obsessed with, and he may actually try to do it. But, back to tea...
