New(ish) eats: Underdogs Sports Bar & Grill

I had been hearing good things about Underdogs Sports Bar & Grill since they opened at the end of January, but never got around to trying it. For one thing, I wasn’t sure where it was. In fact, that’s probably the biggest obstacle for most people who don’t already frequent the area, so I’m going to show you where it is: click here to see my quick video on how to get there.

KHON’s Olena Heu gave it a thumbs-up and got me, Myong Choi, and Catherine Toth out to try it last week. I noticed that many of the former Alan Wong/Pineapple Room chefs were commenting on my instagrams from Underdogs, and the food seemed a little familiar. As it turns out, one of the owners, Jensen Hirota, used to work at Alan Wong’s, and was one of the partners at Kanpai … he stayed with the restaurant even after the other guys left to start Home Bar & Grill. Here’s what we ate and some of what we drank; I think it’s safe to say we gave it a thumbs-up, too.

Underdogs

If you're not familiar with the area, Underdogs might be hard to find. It's on Waiakamilo next to Saveco, which is next to Fujiya Mochi. And if you go at night, you can park in either lot, since Saveco and Fujiya close early. Still not familiar? Underdogs used to be a hostess bar called Lao Star; prior to that it was a series of hostess bars (I only remember as far back as Club Chantelle). For some reason, when I mention these names, men say, "Oh, I know where that is, now! Not that I've been there."

After reading your and Cat's blog, my friends and I decided to check it out. In addition to what you guys tried, we had the Nihon steak. It is teriyaki steak over a bed of French fries. It sounded a little weird to me, but it turned out to be the best dish we ordered. We definitely will be back there again. Everything was so yummy and the prices are so reasonable. When we got our check, we even had to ask our server if the total was correct cause we were expecting to pay more. Thanks!

Delicate Blossom:  OK, saw Cat's blog and yours...I'm full from the pix.  I am familiar with the location...there was a stabbing there once not too far back.  Isn't it too close to Hawaii News Now for Olena?  Either that or she hangs with the competition after work.  The absolute blast would be the Mattress Guy from across the street come in and sell you guys a mattress to moe moe after fuud and drinks!!

@Cat LOL! Actually the one that goes to Waikiki Beach Walk parking is no longer valid because the Sheraton shut off access to the back road. Maybe I sent too many people that way.

@MyongChoi : Do you like it better than Home Bar? Our experience was mixed.

@russkar  @MyongChoi I wouldn't say it's the same as Home, though. As they say in Asia, "Same same but different!"

@russkar Haven't been to Home yet but have heard good things.

Yes, I will be there at Kitchen on Thursday! Been waiting to go back already!
