Happy hour and beyond at Restaurant Wada

I hate to admit it, but I had never been to Restaurant Wada until recently. All of my foodie friends and other restaurant owners rave about it, but I think I just needed a little push to try it.

First, food writer Sean Morris sent a bat signal to have a late dinner there one night. I joined him and some other food bloggers in a fabulous meal — with him ordering, of course, since he knows what their specialties are — with items from sushi to noodles to tongue. I was sold, and was already thinking of going back, when restaurant manager Mark Rogers invited us to try their new happy hour menu.

Happy hour at Wada is Tuesday through Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m. with selected food prices ranging from $2.50 to $5 and selected drinks at $3. (You can see the happy hour menu, plus more photos, here.) Not bad, right? It’s a good variety of both simple and elevated dishes at very reasonable prices, and a good way to get you to look at what else they have on the regular menu.

The first eight food photos, below, are from the happy hour menu; the rest are from the regular menu. (Prices in parenthesis quote happy hour first, then regular prices.) This gallery is a mix of both our first dinner there (we paid) and our second visit for happy hour (they paid). Nonetheless, you’ll find, as I did, that the overall menu is a good value for what you get — and many of the ingredients are unusual things that you won’t find anywhere else in town. Most importantly, you’ll enjoy the super Japanese-y flavors. If you’ve been to Japan, you’ll immediately miss it.

Whether you're drinking alcohol or not, start your night with a glass of yuzu soda, which is super refreshing and just slightly tart. You'll never want lemonade again.
