FUUD: The Alley in Aiea

Share Button

Hawaii has always had great restaurants attached to bowling alleys.

Consider Kapiolani Coffee Shop in Kam Bowl. Or the restaurant in Bowling City, where my grandfather used to serve his popular tripe stew.

And now there’s The Alley Restaurant in the renovated Aiea Bowl, an aging alley that got an expensive facelift a few years ago by brothers Gregg and Glenn Uyeda.

The restaurant concept was always a central part of their business model — and it’s obvious when you’re there how popular this alley eatery is.

While the menu remains fairly homestyle and local, it does offer gourmet twists to the usual fare, like the Tasty Chicken, essentially an upscale version of the popular Korean-style fried chicken. This blend of retro and nouveau cuisine is exactly what this restaurant works.

So after a morning of bowling — and working up an appetite — here’s what we ate:

Several years ago brothers Glenn and Gregg Uyeda bought and renovated the 50-year-old bowling alley in Aiea. They made a few successful changes, including turning it into a nightclub at night, adding cosmic bowling, hosting events and opening a restaurant that boasts tasty eats.

The Alley Restaurant, Aiea Bowl, 99-115 Aiea Heights Dr. Hours: 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, breakfast served from 7 to 10 a.m. daily. Phone: (808) 486-3499

Ooo that tasty chicken looks ono! Seriously, I'm making a list of places to go eat when I come back next month, and like half the list is places I see on Nonstop!

Only been there once. Order was incorrect, they didn't fix it. Only accepted the dessert order from the only guy at our table. Really, she asked him what he wanted and then left. The hot apple crumble was good, but we would have rather not had to share just one dessert for the table.

I love The Alley! Isn't it a shame that so many bowling alleys have closed?

Wow how many times did you turn 36? Party party party! ;-) Looks like you had a lot of fun. Yes Aiea Bowl has really made a transformation, it's almost a sort of hip place to go to now. I just wish it was a little easier to just bowl and not have to book a party to do it, but that's the nature of the business. Anyway I recommend the hamburger steak/loco moco and Tasty Chicken, and also the "Mama Miya's Chocolate Cake" along with the famous Lemon Crunch. Still have to try quite a bit of the menu actually, taking it for granted 'cause it's so close to me I guess.

@nonstopmari I didn't try the tirimisu. Honestly, I haven't eaten any dessert except for the lemon crunch cake. I THINK I'm going to try something else — and I don't. Never.

@johngarcia Last time I was in Hawai'i and I saw that Kam Bowl had closed, I was kinda sad. 10th grade PE at Kamehameha, we got to pick different sports to do, and one of my choices was bowling. Kam Bowl was where I basically learned how to bowl.

@johngarcia YES! I miss bowling alleys. I used to bowl all the time. Hoping that Waialae reopens. It would be a shame to see that go, too.
