FUUD: Revisiting Hy’s Steak House

Hy’s Steak House for dinner, I got the same reaction:

“Man, I haven’t eaten there in years!”

Yeah, me, neither.

The steakhouse off Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki isn’t the hopping joint it may have been before. But it’s still one of the best-known steakhouses in Hawaii.

Hy’s, which opened in Waikiki about 25 years ago, was part of a Canadian-owned chain. And, to be honest, the place hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s still dark, woodsy, very masculine. Not the kind of place you’d take you gal pals for a night of Cosmos and girl talk.

But that’s exactly what we did.

Here’s what out evening looked like:

Inside Hy's Steak House

This restaurant really looks like a steakhouse. The interior was designed to resemble an old English mansion — complete with old books and framed art — with the ambiance of a private gentlemen's club.

Hy’s Steak House, 2440 Kuhio Ave. in Waikiki. Hours: 6-10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5:30-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Phone: (808) 922-5555.

Very informative. So Hy's really isn't as expensive as I thought it was. If the potato sides are included, that makes a huge difference in price when you take out the family. Might go soon. Always loved Hy's.

CAT: Was away on the continent.....Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud pix! Tenks! Went to Hy's this year and it was like it never changed. Even Audie was there albeit older...the night I went was very busy. It seemed noisier than in the old days..

Hey, I wonder, did you see my Uncle Audy performing live when you were there? Haven't seen him in forever!

Hy's was the first fine dining restaurant I've ever been to. It was just after I started working regularly after college and I wanted to take my parents out for a nice dinner and I chose Hy's. We liked it so much we went back for the next few special occassions (also because after that first visit they'd send coupons to us in the mail for BOGO offers!).

So many steakhouses to choose from now though...hopefully they'll survive.

This brought up good old memories. I remember that garlic cheese bread, steak and strawberry flambe dessert from my childhood.

Is he still alive? Just kidding. :)
