There may be a black sheep in every family, but in the case of Black Sheep Cream Co., that’s not a bad thing.
The local ice creamery recently opened in Waipahu near Costco, and news spread fast. I text my fellow Leeward foodie friend and we make plans to check it out ASAP.
Since Black Sheep has been getting buzz via Instagram, we go right when they open at 10 a.m. When you’re an adult, you’re allowed to have ice cream at any time of the day.
I ask Tasi, the owner, how she came up with the name. She says she wanted something catchy that would convey that Black Sheep is different.
“We’re one of a kind, and playing with different flavor combos makes us rebels,” she explains.
Not a baaaaaaaad idea. Here’s a look at their menu.
It’s a smart decision to visit early in the day. Since their ice cream is made in-house in small batches, they often run out of certain flavors by closing.
There are flavors of the month, but when we go only Marsha! Marsha! is available. The hazelnut cream with roasted marshmallows is delicious. I figure I’ll be back before the month ends. Then I can sample the other two.
We decide on an ice cream flight ($10.50). Four scoops may sound like overload, but these are smaller than regular scoops. The flight comes with your choice of house-made hot fudge or caramel.
The ice cream is soft, but we have no problem finishing the entire flight before it melts.
Joe Gets Nuts is one of the most popular flavors. The strong coffee flavor is addicting, and the chewy brownie pieces are studded with mac nuts. It’s the ideal balance of smooth, creamy, rich ice cream with nutty chunks.
Suga Suga Wrinkle Nut, a salty-sweet blend of brown sugar cream and house-made pecan brittle, is Tasi’s favorite. It melts too quickly to a decent picture, but I highly recommend it. Caramel lovers will swoon for this one — the brown sugar ice cream reminds me of a churro, and the pecan brittle adds extra crunch without being too hard.
My friend gets a sample of Once You Go Black and immediately decides to order it. She likes the intense black sesame flavor, and once I dig my spoon in, I see why.
We’re completely satisfied and overloaded with sugar. Before we’re even out the door, we’re already talking about our next visit. Twice in the same week may be a little tacky. Perhaps next week.
