“A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures to anything.”
That’s the favorite Irish proverb of my friend Roisin Neville, who happens to be Irish and Miss Jameson 2016 from last year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Here’s what she has to say about St. Patrick’s Day:
I’ve been in Hawaii almost three years now. My first St. Patrick’s day away from home I didn’t expect it would be a big deal here, given that Ireland and Hawaii are on opposite sides of the world, but when my roommates invited me to the St. Patrick’s day block party in Chinatown, I was very surprised with how many people where there celebrating.
St. Patrick’s day in Ireland is a very festive experience, especially in Dublin city center. The streets and pubs are crowded with cheerful people dressed in green and every year each town and city has its own parade which involves groups, schools and organizations.
Last year I was asked to participate in the parade in Waikiki as Miss Jameson. We started off at the Irish bar Kelly O’Neils. It was a lot of fun driving down Kalakaua waving to locals and tourists. I met quite a few people who were surprised that I actually was Irish with red hair and an Irish accent (the stereotype ?). Later that evening, dressed in green with shamrocks on my face, I joined some friends at Murphy’s bar (my favorite Irish bar) for some fish and chips and a Guinness, of course.
I would definitely recommend visiting the parade on the day but my favorite part about St. Patrick’s day is the great food, drinks, music and atmosphere in Chinatown.
Here’s more about the Chinatown block party and other Oahu events to check out. Unless otherwise noted, all events take place on St. Patrick’s Day, Friday, March 17th.
