Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot, with more than 300 locations spanning China to New York, will open Friday at Ward Centre. I was invited Wednesday evening to a media event to preview the menu and see what’s unique about this rapidly expanding hot pot chain.

Unlike most hot pot places in Hawaii, Little Sheep only has two broths, a 36-spice original soup broth and a vegetarian mushroom broth. Diners are able to request different levels of spiciness or order a low sodium option.

There are three full pages meat, veggie and seafood options on the menu. Even the pickiest eaters should be able to find interesting options for their hot pots. The manager guessed that it would cost roughly $25 a head.

Here’s a look at what we sampled:

The menu only features two desserts ,and although we were stuffed, we agreed that the yam mochi with azuki bean filling was magical. The filling was a thinner consistency in comparison to most Japanese applications making it easier to eat since it was less sticky. The yam mochi provided a nice balance of semi-sweet flavor that was subtle without overpowering the flavors in this hot dessert. The powdered sugar on top was just the right amount of sweetness needed to tie the dessert together.
