‘Hawaii Five-O’ Recap: ‘Na Ki`i’

How does the saying go? “If you don’t have anything nice to say….” Well if I were to abide by that saying, this would be a very short blog.

I fully understand the need for filler episodes. It’s an extremely challenging task to write 20+ meaningful episodes in a TV season. There are times when characters need to just have fun with an episode, where there are no key plot developments, but just a simple case to help fill the gaps between the weeks. But with this week’s episode, “Na Ki`i,” the series has hit a new low.

All right, let’s just get this over with. Here’s this week’s look at The Good, The Bad and The Weird.

The Good

  • Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The Bad

  • Having Dog the Bounty Hunter and his crew on the show represents scraping the bottom of the barrel of stunt casting.
  • “We’re not exactly the Waltons.” – McGarrett to his mom on their unique family dynamic. How is this still a relevant reference? The only people who’d recognize this reference are those who actually watched the original “Hawaii Five-0″ during its run.
  • Two roller derby teams, not a single tita sighted.
  • “Dicey was the heart and soul of the team” – Roller derby coach. She meant so much to your team that the same day you found out she died, you simply brushed it off as an inconvenience comparable to a flat tire and resumed practice. Sure, that’s a natural reaction to a teammate’s horrific death.
  • The show once again proves that the concept of time has no meaning when there’s a story to tell. In the span of a few hours, the 5-0 team investigates the crime scene; Max performs an autopsy; Fong analyzes a ticket found on the victim; the 5-0 team visits the Kapiolani Rec Center to ask questions and returns to 5-0 HQ to discuss their undercover strategy where McG tells Catherine he’s already received permission from her commanding officer for the farcical charade of going undercover as a roller derby racer. This is all before lunch. Then later the same day, the roller derby team holds a tryout to replace their teammate, who was just found dead that morning. I’d really like to know how the 5-0 team is able to slow the Earth’s rotation this way. That knowledge would sure come in handy when I have a bunch of deadlines to meet.
  • Just when you thought there were no more ways the writers could awkwardly force Catherine into a storyline…

The Weird

  • The fact that I am still watching this show.

MC:  Amen!  What was weird is roller derby with no banked track.  How come the porn pix had the women in clothes.  It would have been better if they digitally blanked the sensitive spots on nude photos for realism.  Time to throw a life preserver to 5-0, they are sinking badly!  This one was worthy of having the shrimp truck sell stuff at the roller derby championship.  How come the whole 5-0 staff ends up at the burial?  Did they know Dana?  She must have got connections to be buried at Punchbowl.  The fake rain was a bit much on such a sunny day.  Ho, Catherine in high heels at Magic Island sea wall...pretty gutsy!  So far the only thing consistently good is the opening theme!!  We might as well have 5-0 solve the "Wonder Blunder" at UH!

H50 needs a new, sophisticated Asian stereotype 'evil genius'. are you familiar with Gene Park's excellent impersonation of such? the general who says: "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" it's quite striking, really.

you had me at 'Dog,' Neil Abercrombie won't acknowledge my plea to have Dog one way'd to the mainland with all the other trash that has washed up like tsunami debris.

@MyongChoi @konaish I'm really starting to move away from this show. The potential was huge for this redux but what made the original show back in the late '60's and early '70's was the fantastic writing and story lines. It was straight forward with less fluff. I would bring in some new writers who have watched the old series and have them try to replicate the feel and in some cases the look. As for the cast. Caan needs to go. His performance lacks enthusiasm now. He hates Hawai‘i and it shows in his performance. Park as nice as she looks is now just a set prop. Her character needs a revamp. Quick! McGarrett's Mom? Kill her off already. Not interesting enough. Oh and the girlfriend of McG? Can we sink her of the mouth of Pearl Harbor already? Send her home with Caan. The one thing I do like is Kim as Chin. A believable role that can go deeper in the internal Five-0 doings. But the biggest miss is....Wo Fat. We need to see him more even if its just for a few minutes in an episode. That's a story line that works and he is the typical arch nemesis. Let's see the final episodes for the season. I'll decide then if I continue with this show. I really want to but something needs to be done. Jack Lord always said "Be here, Aloha", when he plugged next weeks episode. I'd love to obey Jack.

haha....actually, I thought having Dog helped to add to the campiness of the show, and for mainlanders (maybe even me for a second), it was like "what the hell am I watching, again?!" That being said, I kind of felt like most of the episode was done for the benefit of the viewers outside of Hawaii. (Not that they should make it for kamaaina viewers only, just an observation.)

The plot piece that I'm reeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllly tired of is Steve's mom and her constant lying. I just cringe whenever I see Christine Lahti now in the show, which is too bad.

I was excited about the new episode, then my bubble was burst. The comments on twitter #H50 kept it amusing. I liked @naugusta 's comment about having Apolo Ohno come in to save the episode :)  Next week is sure to be better.

Seriously, also having the roller derby plot overdone. I think Bones did a roller derby episode a few weeks ago. I'm sure there are other shows that have done that. Another thing, when McGarrett and his mom were on the Ala Wai paddling, I really wanted to see real paddling teams. What's up with that? His mom can kick a$$ but she could hardly handle paddling?

@Melissa808 "What the hell am I watching, again?!" ... this, sadly, has become my Monday night mantra more and more, and yet I keep hanging on waiting for Lenkov and Co to make the right (or any) adjustments. Dumping Lahti  and returning Borth to her recurring only status would be a good start.

@Melissa808 Totally agree on McG's mom. Get rid of her already.

The issue I have with the subject of your first sentence is that I sincerely don't believe that the show intends to be campy. Sure there are a few tongue in cheek moments in many episodes but I think they're trying to produce a serious police procedural. They've just run out ideas a long time ago and are basically just throwing everything at a wall at this point just to see what sticks.

@islandgirlinnc Haha, yeah, they definitely looked like they were struggling in the Ala Wai. Maybe the noxious fumes from the water was getting to them.

@AutumnGal @Melissa808 let's hope they do what you suggest! I'd totally be on board.

@MyongChoi whaaaat? In that case, that's kinda sad. I enjoy the campiness like I used to enjoy watching "Xena, Warrior Princess."
