Winner of 2011 Pulitzer Prize or Drama and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, “Clybourne Park” opened Thursday at Manoa Valley Theatre. This funny, yet provocative, comedy/drama, written by Bruce Norris, is told in two acts set 50 years apart. The first act, set in 1959, has nervous community leaders anxiously trying to stop the sale of a home to a black family. The second act, set in the same house in the present day, shows the now predominantly African-American neighborhood as it battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification.
Vanita Rae Smith is the guest director of the show, which stars Dezmond Gilla, Jeanne Herring, Greg Hunt, Adam LeFebvre, Russell Motter, Miriam Neuman and Therese Olival. The show is intended for audiences 14 and older.
May 29-31; June 1, 4-8 (Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 4 p.m.)
Tickets are available here.
