Our favorite ice cream

Today kicks off National Ice Cream Month — an annual July celebration that began 30 years ago. Plus, with the weather being so muggy and hot, we figured we’d share our favorite ice cream flavors both here on the site and for today’s KHON morning show segment.

So here’s a roundup of ice cream faves from our Frolic crew.

Melissa Chang: Baskin-Robbins

If you know me, you know I'm all about the delicate crunch. I love the mint chip flavor itself, but Baskin-Robbins makes the best one because they use chocolate shavings, which make the crunch subtle... not tooth-breaking. I appreciate that other brands may give you a chocolate chunk or a whole chocolate chip, but that is NOT delicate.

I just read through all the choices. That does it. You are ALL hereby ordered out to the North Shore with all due haste so that I can chaperone your visit to Scoop of Paradise Factory in Waialua for wop-yo-jaw good homemade local ice cream!

I love Kozmic Cones too. When in Hilo, you need to try K's Drive In Twist Cone. Soft serve ice cream with a fruit sherbert twist. Yumm

the only kind i get is Double Rainbow, Ultra Choclate. Trader Joe's carries it under their own brand now. the reason it's the only kind i get is because INEZ likes it. once upon a time, in my wild unmarried days, there was Pistachio, Butter Pecan, Blackberry, Peach. but those days are gone now. i've given up those flavors you can't bring home to mother. i'm living right now.

Fuud Reminds One Life Is Cool:  I agree, I agree...Ice Cream of any kind is my weakness.  I am not very adventurous so plain old vanilla or chocolate works any time.  If I feel like something different I go with Mint Chocolate Chip or anything with coconut.

MC:  Ice Cream is not guud for someone on a diet.  Take it from me that is why I am overweight, poor, and old.

If you're into gelato, there's a good brand called Talenti. It's seriously good!

@Ynaku Yes I love the K's Drive-in twist cone - they're located near my old high school. I will definitely get it the next time I visit.

@Ynaku Oh yes! I love that place, so close to my old high school. I will definitely get a twist cone on my next visit.

@turkfontaine I think Double Rainbow was the first ice cream joint I went to in San Francisco, back in the day when I was too poor to stay in a hotel and would crash at my friend Ann's home. Damn that stuff tasted so good then! I bet it still does.

@aako I've seen Talenti before and just hadn't picked it up to try it, thanks for the recommendation!
