Eat the Street: Black Saturday

Eat the Street: Black Saturday went live in Kakaako Saturday night despite forecasts of strong winds. Twenty-nine trucks and street food vendors were out with $5 pupu samplers, making this the first ETS built specifically for mega-grazing. Also tonight: Retail was in the mix, people, even though sporadic rain kept lines short and parking choke — until prime time, when the skies got serious.

Starting from after 7 p.m., sideways rain and strong winds chased eaters into the shelter of tents. Diehards showed up with rain ponchos and umbrellas, or strolled around impervious. Not many vendors sold out tonight, and as crowds thinned many began packing up, including Nonstop, after our tent broke and we couldn’t protect our equipment from the elements.

Better luck next time, all. Save the date: Friday, Dec. 16, in the haunted house parking lot on Ala Moana Blvd. Theme: candy lane (sweet!). Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted. Thanks for coming out.

EO: Finally they have samplers! Have not been to recent ETS because who wants to eat only one truck's full plate? I told the organizers about it after the second one, they agreed but said trying to get the trucks to do that was a non-starter. I think the trucks are finally getting the message. Why ETS during football games? I guess that is my next gripe! LOL!

Shoot! I forgot about the pumpkin cheesecake! And I missed the fairycakes again! The cupcake I had was gorgeous, though.

As one of those who showed up later, when the rain and wind was really coming down, I enjoyed my little adventure. While far from being impervious, a little rain hasn't killed me yet. As I mentioned last night, it's great to see the diehards come out.

You know, it's easy to be someone's friend (or in this case, an ETS attendee) when times are good; you're more committed when there's more challenge involved. Here's hoping more loyal diehards will continue to attend - and that it will be a little drier for our moisture-averse friends.
