Kailua eats: The Food Company

As you know, I’m a townie and don’t drive outside of my five-mile radius very often. I complained about driving over the Pali to get to an event for my other blog this week — never mind that it was to a party for Carvill & Co.’s new affiliation with Sotheby’s, which promised fab food and wine at President Barack Obama’s Kailua vacation home. It was a drive that had me get on the H-3. That’s a drive for me!

My friend Vicki Yu, who is a realtor with Carvill & Co., wanted to make the trek worth my while, so suggested we go to a place called The Food Company after the party. Now, if you live on the Windward side, you already know and love this place, which has been open for a couple of years. It started out as more of a market, where you could buy fresh produce and food items; there was a small area for table service if you wanted to dine on owner/chef Jason Kiyota’s creations. Since then, the market portion has gradually faded away and the space is now mostly a restaurant (with a few food cases for take-out) and Kiyota’s one-man operation has expanded to include kitchen and wait staff.

The place is super casual, so you can walk in with shorts and slippas … in fact, most if not all of the patrons are dressed this way. But make no mistake, this is elevated dining. Kiyota is blogger Ed Morita’s classmate from KCC’s culinary program, and he makes brilliant dishes. We were pretty bummed out that our friends bailed on us for dinner, since you want more mouths at the table to be able to sample more things. Nonetheless, here’s what we had, and I’m looking forward to driving all the way back out there for more.

Thank you so much for coming to our grand opening for Carvill Sotheby's International Realty. I've been The Food Company in Kailua as well and consider them to be one of the best restaurants on the island.

We are very excited that Vicki Yu has joined our company. Thank you for posting all your kind words.

Although as a proper Chinee girl picture #4 would have happened anyway, the wine was generously and voluntarily provided to us by the fine folks at Carvill Sotheby's International Realty (my new home).

@jlieu They definitely have a lot of "light" dishes that are in your diet! (Which you don't need to be on)

@Melissa808 I assume so?  My friends were happy.  I don't know how much escargot usually costs.

@Melissa808 @jlieu I agree with Melissa you don't need to be on a diet, so please join me for a meal there sometime and come paddling to work it off!

@HawaiiYogini regular escargot usually costs about $12-15 in most restaurants so I think so!
