Hundreds gathered at Mamiya Theatre Saturday night for a VIP screening of Bob Bates’ documentary, “Ingredients Hawaii,” which focuses on local efforts to take control of the food we eat. Prior to the screening, attendees sampled dishes from He’eia Pier, Sweet Home Waimanalo and Town, all of which were featured in the film for their abundant use of locally grown products.

After the 30-minute documentary, the audience was treated to a Q&A with several people featured in the film, including interns from Ma’o Organic Farm, Alan Joaquin of FarmRoof and chefs Mark Noguchi and Ed Kenney.

Here are photos from the event.

If you missed it, here’s a review of “Ingredients Hawaii” by Nonstop food writer Mari Taketa. Future screenings aren’t scheduled yet, but will be at community venues. The film will be available for screenings for a nominal fee; down the line, it will be released on DVD and in about a year, Bates says, you’ll be able to find it on Netflix.

looks like I really missed out! awesome turnout and lots of happy faces. i hope that Ingredients Hawaii reaches everyone here!!

@farmroof was proud to be a part of Ingredients Hawaii, a truly inspirational food documentary. Perhaps the best part of the film was how it highlighted several unique approaches to farming and gardening. Hawaii currently imports close to 90% of it's food, but that's about to change thanks to the innovative, hard working and dedicated farmers, citizens & companies of Hawaii.

Thanks Melissa. I enjoyed the movie, created additional inspiration on "doing" my part and not just thinking about it. Why @IngredientsHI did not put together a Social Media Team like we do on Maui for important events like this is a mystery. Who do we talk to about that? Great to meet Ed, Mari and so many others. I'm so thankful.

@DaniaKatz mainstream marketers would do a social media team, I guess...? Hard to say. I know @cheekeater has learned the magic of being inclusive rather than exclusive, maybe he's a good one to talk to in the industry. @parkrat & I have a class coming up...that would help, I hope!

I know, I was suddenly inspired to start a rooftop garden on my condo! Although it's super hot in my area....I can't imagine the sun not frying the veggies where I live!
