An interview with Britt Daniel of Divine Fits
Interview by Casey Ishitani
Indie supergroup Divine Fits, comprised of indie rock veterans Britt Daniel (Spoon), Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade / Handsome Furs), Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks) and Alex Fischel burst on the scene last year with an appearance on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and “The Late Show With David Letterman” just months after their live debut in Austin, TX. The online world loved it, the indie crowd loved it, and the rest is recent history. They’ll be coming to Honolulu straight off their tour of Australia to play a special show for us, and word is that their live sets are not to be missed.

We had the chance to get a few words from singer Britt Daniel, also the frontman for Spoon:
What is the songwriting process for Divine Fits?
It’s different every time. sometimes I bring in some, sometimes Dan brings in some, sometimes the songs start spontaneously at a rehearsal or a soundcheck and then we shape them into a song and put words on them. It’s good to have a variety of angles.
Have any of you traveled to or performed in Honolulu before?
I’ve never been there, but have always wanted to go. I need to study up on what to do, but at the very least I want to spend some time on the beach.
Given the positive feedback on social media and YouTube, it seems this band was made for live performances. Was the initial desire to just play together and figure the album out later, or vice versa?
Our idea was to make a record, put it out, then tour. It felt backwards in some ways, but made sense in the long run.
With the current list of future shows, it seems like Divine Fits is heading up to a full year of traveling from gig to gig. What should fans be expecting from the show? Any new songs written on the road?
We’ve been writing some new ones, yes. We’ve got three that are really close to being played, and we’re going to record a single in early March.
Just to give you an idea of quirky, ridiculously catchy musical genius behind Divine Fits, here’s the official video for their song, “My Love is Real”:
