Remembering Sen. Daniel K. Inouye

Like many people across the state and country, I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Sen. Daniel K. Inouye’s death.

During the past two election cycles, I had the privilege of working on two major campaigns, Neil Abercrombie’s run for governor in 2010, and Mazie Hirono’s bid this year to fill retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka’s Senate seat. While working on the campaigns, I was able to photograph Inouye at various events.

What I remember about him was that he was serious when he had to be, but always smiling and laughing when talking with people. One moment that particularly stands out for me took place at a Hirono fundraiser held at the Honolulu Cafe. Inouye entered the cafe, shook my hand, and asked, “Where’s your hat?” Those who know me know I usually wear a pork pie hat. But that day, I had forgotten my hat at campaign headquarters. The fact that Inouye noticed that I forgot my hat blew me away. It’s one of the many moments I’ll never forget.

Here are some photos I had the honor to take of Sen. Daniel Inouye:

i love some of the pictures you have of the late senator.... he sure had a rascal smile!  :)  great to see the candid shots of him laughing instead of posed shots.  thank you for sharing these memories of such a heroic man who will be sorely missed.
