Our recent roundup of Honolulu’s donut craze showcased the newest places to grab a dozen. Among them: MoDo, the mochi donut specialist inside Mitsuwa Japanese grocery at International Market Place. We knew we had to bring these glazed rings of chewy, lightly sweet fried goodness to our Awesome eats downtown lunchtime pop-up.
How did MoDo get to Hawaii? Owner Chris Watanabe’s three years in Japan gave him plenty of chances to visit the Mister Donut shop near his train station. He loved the pon de ring donuts so much that he started experimenting on a similar donut. That’s what MoDo is — an homage to Mister Donut’s pon de rings, in assorted flavors and glazes.
You can pick up a half-dozen at the corner of Bishop and King streets downtown this Friday, Aug. 25 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. or until they sell out. Pre-orders are strongly recommended, since every Awesome eats offering tends to sell out.
Each box of six donuts is $10 and includes:
Don’t forget to bring your pre-order receipt (email OK) when you pick up! Sorry, no refunds. Any items not picked up by 1 p.m. on the day of the event will be held at our office at 1000 Bishop St., Suite 909 until the end of day (5 p.m.) and then disposed of.
